About Harley

Harley Rose is an Honorary Associate Professor in the School of Life and Environmental Sciences within the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney. He earned his Bachelor of Agricultural Science (BAgrSc) and Master of Agricultural Science (MAgrSc) from the University of Queensland, and his PhD from Cornell University. Rose joined the University of Sydney in 1973 as a Lecturer in Entomology, teaching and researching insect toxicology and pesticide resistance. His career includes positions such as Honorary Senior Lecturer in the former Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources.

Rose's research centers on entomology, with specializations in the taxonomy, phylogeny, ecology, and evolution of Australian soil-burrowing cockroaches (Blaberidae: Panesthiinae and Geoscapheinae), including giant burrowing species like Macropanesthia rhinoceros. Key publications include co-authorship on 'Evidence from multiple gene sequences indicates that termites evolved from wood-feeding cockroaches' (Current Biology, 2000), description of five new species of soil-burrowing cockroaches from Queensland rainforests (2014), and 'Reductitherus cryptostomus n. gen., n. sp.' (2024). He has also published on insecticide resistance mechanisms and susceptibility in pests such as the diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella), sheep blowfly (Lucilia cuprina), green vegetable bug (Nezara viridula), and Thaumastocoris peregrinus, including studies on imidacloprid efficacy and population genetics. Rose served as Secretary of the Entomological Society of New South Wales from 1982 to 1983 and participated as a Chief Investigator in ARC Linkage Infrastructure grants.
