About Haruhiko

Haruhiko Udono is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Systems Engineering at the College of Engineering and the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Ibaraki University. He earned his PhD from the Graduate School of Electronic Science and Technology at Shizuoka University in March 1996. His research focuses on the science and engineering of semiconducting silicides, with emphasis on the development of energy conversion and optoelectronic devices using environmentally friendly materials such as magnesium silicide (Mg2Si) and iron disilicide (β-FeSi2). This includes work on thermoelectric generators, thermophotovoltaic cells, infrared photodiodes, and imaging sensors.

Udono has held his current professorship since April 2018, following an earlier appointment as Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronics at the College of Engineering beginning in April 2012. He served as a Visiting Researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, from July 2008 to February 2009. His contributions include extensive publications on crystal growth, thin films, and device applications of semiconducting silicides, as well as authorship of the book Science and Technology of Silicide Semiconductors. He has received recognition including the Outstanding Reviewer Award from the Japanese Journal of Applied Physics in 2025 and has held leadership roles such as Vice Chair of the JSAP Professional Group of Semiconducting Silicide and Related Materials.
