Heather K. Calloway serves as the Executive Director of University Collections at Indiana University Bloomington, overseeing the stewardship of the university's diverse collections to support teaching, research, and service missions. A member of the Cherokee Nation and native New Mexican from Albuquerque, she earned her Ed.D. in Higher Education Management from the University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Library Science specializing in archives from the University of Maryland, College Park, a Master of Theological Studies focusing on fraternal and religious organizations from the Iliff School of Theology, and a B.A. in Religious Studies and Political Science from the University of New Mexico. As an Associate Research Scientist, her academic interests center on North America and fraternal and religious organizations within the Arts and Culture domain. In 2021, she founded the Center for Fraternal Collections & Research, and in 2022, her team launched a new interactive teaching and exhibit space at the renovated McCalla School.
Dr. Calloway's research specializations include preserving fraternal and religious memorabilia and collections, developing innovative methods to engage new audiences with primary sources, rare objects, and collections through augmented and virtual reality; preservation of Freemasonry, fraternal organizations, secret societies, civic, religious, and charitable organizations; the Episcopal Church including preservation of its records, art, and artifacts; historic preservation of material culture, ephemera, and rare books; addressing hidden collections; emerging technologies in special collections, libraries, and museums; archival and primary source applications; American Christian history; and New Mexico history. Her scholarly articles have been published in various outlets, and she delivers regular lectures on the preservation and care of archival, museum, and library collections. She contributes to the academic community as a member of the Advisory Circle for the Institute for Indigenous Knowledge, supporting faculty in the Native American and Indigenous Studies Program, and serves on the national Board of the Archives for the Episcopal Church and the board of the J.H. Rathbone Museum and Resource Center. Affiliated with the Office of the Vice President for Research and Arts and Humanities, Dr. Calloway advances the intersection of Arts and Culture with scholarly collections at Indiana University Bloomington.
