Heather Johnston is a psychology faculty member in the Social Science department at Columbus State Community College, where she began teaching in 2005. She earned her B.A. in Communication Processes and Disorders from the University of Florida in 1996. She then pursued graduate studies at The Ohio State University, receiving her M.A. in Speech and Hearing Science in 1998. Following a period working as an audiologist at the VA Hospital in Dayton, she returned to The Ohio State University to complete her Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology. This strong academic foundation in cognitive psychology and speech sciences supports her teaching and expertise in the field of psychology. Her professional career trajectory reflects a commitment to both clinical practice and academic instruction, bridging audiology and psychological sciences.
Heather Johnston's expertise encompasses human learning, memory, sensory perception, and language acquisition. She regularly teaches Introduction to Psychology (PSY 1100), Psychopathology (PSY 2331), Human Growth and Development Over the Life Span (PSY 2340), Introduction to Communication Disorders (SHS 2230), and First Year Experience Seminar (COLS 1100). Serving as one of the lead faculty for the Freshman Experience Seminar (COLS 1100), she contributes to student orientation and success programs at the college. In 2021, she was recognized as one of the winners of the Columbus State Community College Distinguished Teaching Award, highlighting her impact on student learning in psychology courses. Through her courses and leadership role, Johnston supports the development of foundational skills in psychology for community college students.
