Salvador Hector Ochoa earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from St. Edward’s University in 1981, a Master of Education in guidance and counseling from Pan American University in 1984, and a Doctorate in school psychology from Texas A&M University in 1989. His career in higher education encompasses nearly 35 years, with 17 years as a faculty member and 17 years in progressive administrative roles. He served as Dean of the College of Education at The University of Texas-Pan American from 2007 to 2014, where he advanced accreditation, assessment, faculty development, enrollment management, and student retention. From 2014 to 2019, he was Professor and Dean of the College of Education at The University of New Mexico, raising $11.47 million to fund endowed student scholarships and enhancing alumni engagement and fundraising efforts. Ochoa joined San Diego State University in 2019 as Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, leading initiatives to expand the research enterprise, allocate resources for graduate students, invest in faculty and instructors, and co-lead strategic planning to establish priorities for university growth and development.
Ochoa’s research specializations focus on bilingual psychoeducational assessment and educational programming issues related to Latino students. He co-authored the book Assessing Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students: A Practical Guide with Robert L. Rhodes and Samuel O. Ortiz, published by Guilford Press. His expertise includes fiscal management, accreditation, state and university regulations, and student success strategies. Ochoa has received the Texas A&M University College of Education and Human Development Outstanding Alumni Award in 2013 and the Texas A&M University Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award in Teaching in 2001. Since 2023, he has served as President of Texas A&M University-San Antonio.
