She earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Connecticut in 1947, focusing on public health nursing, and a Master of Science from Yale University in 1952, with an emphasis on mental health nursing related to the growth and development of children. Watson was one of the second group of four African American women commissioned as officers in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps during World War II, serving as an ensign from 1945 to 1946. Following her military service, she worked as a public health and school nursing consultant for the Connecticut State Department of Education from 1948 to 1965. She joined the UConn School of Nursing faculty on September 16, 1965, teaching community and child health for eighteen years, achieving tenure at the rank of associate professor, and retiring on June 1, 1983. In 1984, she received an honorary appointment as Associate Professor Emerita by the university's board of trustees.
Watson's career included significant public service appointments, such as those by Governor John N. Dempsey to the State Committee on the Status of Women and the State Health Coordinating Council, and by Governor Ella Grasso to the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities, the Commission on Hospitals and Healthcare—where she was the sole registered nurse—and the Blue Ribbon Committee to Investigate the Nursing Home Industry. She served on the board of directors of the Women’s League of Hartford for over ten years, including five as president. A former editorial board member of the Journal of School Health, Watson published key articles including "Some Effects of Our Schools on the Mental Health of Children" in the Journal of School Health (September 1955) and "The Role of the School Nurse in the Support of Children with Certain Cardiovascular Disorders" in Nursing Clinics of North America (March 1966). Her honors include the Award for Service to School Children of Connecticut (1961), National Distinguished Service Award (1962), Citation for Outstanding Achievement (1963), and Award for Outstanding Achievements in Nursing Education (1973). She was a member of the Connecticut State Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau, American Nurses Association, and other professional organizations.
