Henry E. Brady is the Class of 1941 Monroe Deutsch Professor of Political Science and Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. He served as Dean of the Goldman School of Public Policy from 2009 to 2021. Brady received his Ph.D. in Economics and Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1980, where his fields included urban politics, public policy, political economy, and econometrics. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physics and mathematics from Harvey Mudd College in 1969 with distinction. His academic career began as an acting Assistant Professor of Public Policy at UC Berkeley from 1978 to 1980, continuing there until 1984. He then held positions as Assistant Professor of Government at Harvard University (1985-1987) and Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago (1987-1990). Returning to Berkeley in 1990, he advanced to full Professor. Brady directed the University of California Data Archive (UC DATA) from 1992 to 2009 and the Survey Research Center from 1999 to 2009. He worked for the federal Office of Management and Budget and other organizations in Washington, D.C. Leadership roles include President of the American Political Science Association (2009-2010), past President of the Political Methodology Section of APSA, Treasurer of APSA (2003-2005), and service on committees for the National Academy of Sciences, National Science Foundation, and others. He serves on editorial advisory boards for the American Journal of Political Science, Political Analysis, and Evaluation Review.
Brady's research focuses on electoral politics and political participation, statistical methodology, dynamics of public opinion and political campaigns, social welfare policy, political polling, program evaluation, and trust in institutions. Major publications include Voice and Equality: Civic Voluntarism in American Politics (1995, Harvard University Press, with Kay Lehman Schlozman and Sidney Verba; recipient of the Philip Converse Award), Letting the People Decide: Dynamics of a Canadian Election (1992, Stanford University Press, with Richard Johnston et al.; Harold Innis Award), The Unheavenly Chorus: Unequal Political Voice and the Broken Promise of American Democracy (2012, Princeton University Press, with Schlozman and Verba), Unequal and Unrepresented: Political Inequality and the People’s Voice in the New Gilded Age (2018, Princeton University Press, with Schlozman and Verba), Rethinking Social Inquiry: Diverse Tools, Shared Standards (2004, Rowman & Littlefield, editor with David Collier; Giovanni Sartori Award), and Oxford Handbook of Political Methodology (2008, Oxford University Press, editor with Janet Box-Steffensmeier and David Collier). His contributions have earned the Frank J. Goodnow Award for distinguished service to the profession (2021), Career Achievement Award from the Society for Political Methodology (2012), election as Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2003), and Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2006).
