Professor Hossam Hamdy serves as Chancellor of Gulf Medical University in Ajman, UAE, where he holds the position of Professor of Surgery and Medical Education. He is an internationally recognized medical educator and practicing pediatric surgeon. His academic qualifications include an MBChB and Doctorate of Surgery from Alexandria University, FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and England, FRCP from the Royal College of Physicians of England, and a PhD in Medical Education from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, with his doctoral work focusing on measurements in medical education and implications for quality.
Throughout his career, Professor Hamdy has established, contributed to, and led multiple medical colleges, including those at Suez Canal University in Egypt, Arabian Gulf University in Bahrain, and Gulf Medical University in the UAE. He has held senior roles such as Vice Chancellor of Medical and Health Science Colleges at Sharjah University, Director of the Institute of Leadership in Higher Education at Sharjah University, Advisor to the President on Medical Education at Qatar University, and Dean of the College of Medicine at Arabian Gulf University. He has also served as a WHO Temporary Advisor and Consultant in Medical Education and as a member of the WFME Assessors team. Professor Hamdy is active in medical education research, with numerous publications in the fields of medical education and surgery, and he has introduced various innovations and best practices. He serves on editorial boards of journals including Medical Teacher, Medical Educator, and the Korean Journal of Medical Education. His contributions have been recognized with awards such as the Sheikh Khalifa Award for Higher Education for Distinguished Professor in Teaching, the Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Best Medical College in the Arab world (awarded to the College of Medicine at Arabian Gulf University under his leadership), honorary Fellow of AMEE in 2021, the Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques from the Republic of France in 2011, and the Health Workers Recognition Award in Health Professionals Education from the WHO Regional Office for Eastern Mediterranean in 2021.
