Howard Bamsey serves as Honorary Professor in the School of Regulation and Global Governance at the Australian National University. He holds the position of Chair of the Global Water Partnership and is a board member of the Climate Policy Initiative and the ClimateWorks Centre. Throughout his distinguished career, Bamsey has occupied pivotal leadership roles in international environmental governance. These include Executive Director at the Green Climate Fund, Director General of the Global Green Growth Institute, Senior Adviser on Sustainable Development to the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Special Adviser on Green Growth to AusAID. Previously, he acted as Australia’s Special Envoy on Climate Change, Deputy Secretary in the Australian Public Service—specifically in the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency—and Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Greenhouse Office. Additionally, he has undertaken several ambassadorial appointments within the Australian foreign service, such as Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, and co-chaired the United Nations’ Dialogue on Long-term Cooperative Action on Climate Change from 2006 to 2007.
Educated at the University of Queensland and Harvard Business School, Bamsey’s academic and research interests encompass climate change, climate change policy, energy efficiency, international negotiations, sustainable development policy, and public policy. He is also affiliated with the ANU Institute for Climate, Energy and Disaster Solutions as part of the climate economics and policy group. His contributions to the literature include the peer-reviewed publication “The water impacts of climate change mitigation measures,” co-authored with P. J. Wallis, M. B. Ward, J. Pittock, K. Hussey, and others, published in Climatic Change in 2014. In recognition of his significant contributions, he was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2013 Australia Day Honours for service to climate change policy mitigation and international negotiations. Bamsey continues to influence global discussions on sustainable development and climate action through his advisory roles.
