Dr. Minh Hue Nguyen serves as Senior Lecturer in EAL/TESOL Teacher Education within the School of Curriculum, Teaching and Inclusive Education, Faculty of Education at Monash University. She holds a PhD in Education from Monash University, awarded in 2015 for her thesis 'Learning to teach EAL in Victorian secondary schools: A sociocultural perspective.' Her academic journey includes an MA in Applied Linguistics from Victoria University of Wellington in 2008 and a BA in English Language Teaching from Vietnam National University in 2003. Prior to her current role, Nguyen taught English language, linguistics, academic skills, research methodology, and TESOL pedagogy at Vietnam National University, Deakin University, and the University of Melbourne. She has also contributed to national and institutional committees designing and evaluating TESOL curricula.
Nguyen's research focuses on teachers' professional learning, curriculum, and pedagogy in TESOL and EAL contexts, emphasizing inter-related aspects such as professional knowledge, emotion, identity, agency, mentoring, and collaboration between EAL and content-area teachers. She employs Vygotskian sociocultural and activity theory perspectives. Her scholarly output includes 48 research items, with her work cited over 970 times on Google Scholar. Notable publications comprise 'An activity theory perspective on Vietnamese preservice English teachers’ identity construction in relation to tensions, emotion and agency' (Language Teaching Research, 2025), 'Language teacher educators as reflective practitioners: an activity theory perspective on identity construction' (TESOL Journal, 2026, with N. Hayati), 'Novice language teachers' agency in developing a linguistically responsive teacher identity during an online placement' (Routledge, 2026, with T.K.A. Dang), and 'Advancing Language Teacher Agency Research: An introduction' (Bloomsbury Academic, 2025, edited volume contribution). Nguyen has earned significant recognition, including the Penny McKay Award Special Commendation for Outstanding Doctoral Thesis in Language Education, Monash Education Research Community’s Publication Award, Monash University’s Postgraduate Publication Award, ATEA/Kay Martinez Award for Best Paper, Monash Dean of Education’s ECR Project Award, and ATEA Earlier Career Researcher Grant. She holds the role of Associate Editor for Second Language Teacher Education journal, peer reviews for Teaching and Teacher Education, and is a member of the Australian Teacher Education Association.
