About Ian

Professor Sir Ian Greer is President and Vice-Chancellor of Queen’s University Belfast, a position he has held since August 2018. A medical graduate of the University of Glasgow with MBBS and MD degrees, he built his early academic career at the same institution, serving as Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology from 1991 and holding the Muirhead Chair of Obstetrics and Gynaecology from 1992 to 2000. In 2001 he was appointed Regius Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Glasgow, a role he held until 2007. He subsequently served as Dean of Hull York Medical School from 2007 to 2010, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at the University of Liverpool from 2010 to 2015, and Vice-President and Dean of the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences at the University of Manchester from 2015 until his move to Belfast; he also directed the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre during this period.

His research and clinical expertise lie in obstetrics and gynaecology, with a particular focus on pregnancy complications and thrombotic disorders. He is recognised internationally for his contributions in this area and has authored or co-authored more than 400 publications, including 14 books and 28 clinical guidelines. Elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2006, he holds additional fellowships including FRCP. In 2023 he was knighted in the King’s Birthday Honours for services to education and the economy in Northern Ireland, and he serves as a Deputy Lieutenant of Belfast. Beyond his leadership at Queen’s, he has held roles such as President of Universities Ireland, member of the Research England Council, and co-founder of the Health Innovation Research Alliance for Northern Ireland, while leading the innovation pillar of the Belfast Region City Deal.
