About Igor

Igor Grossmann is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Waterloo. He earned his PhD from the University of Michigan. Grossmann directs the Wisdom and Culture Lab at the University of Waterloo, where his research examines how people make sense of the world through expectations, lay theories, meta-cognitions, and forecasts, as well as how cultural forces shape human behaviour and societal change. His work integrates perspectives from anthropology, behavioural ecology, computational sciences, economics, philosophy, and psychology, employing methods such as psychometric and computational modelling, behavioural experiments, and ecological assessment.

Grossmann’s representative publications include a 2023 article in Science on AI and the transformation of social science research, a 2023 paper in Nature Human Behaviour on the accuracy of social scientists’ forecasts of societal change as part of the Forecasting Collaborative, a 2022 review in Nature Reviews Psychology on predictors and consequences of intellectual humility, a 2021 article in Psychological Science on training for wisdom through the distanced self-reflection diary method, and a 2020 paper in Science Advances on folk standards of sound judgment. His contributions have been recognized with awards including the Rising Star Award from the Association for Psychological Science, the Joseph B. Gittler Award from the American Psychological Foundation, the SAGE Young Scholar Award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, and election to the College of the Royal Society of Canada. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of Psychological Inquiry and has held editorial roles with other journals.
