Ivan Ingermann is Professor and Head of the Design Area in the Department of Theatre and Film Studies at the University of Georgia, a position he has held since joining the faculty in 2007 as Associate Professor of Theatre and major professor for graduate students in Costume Design. He earned a Master of Fine Arts in Set and Costume Design from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in 1995 and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Costume Design, magna cum laude, from Florida State University in 1992. At UGA, Ingermann developed and teaches courses such as Foundations of Performance Design, Advanced Costume Design I, II, and III, Seminar in Design for the Performing Arts, History of Costume and Décor, Millinery for the Stage and Screen, Fabric Modification for the Entertainment Industry, and Design Portfolio. He oversees the MFA program in Design & Technology and has served as a guest lecturer on topics including Costuming for the Film Industry at Florida State University and Portfolio for the Real World at New York University.
Ingermann’s distinguished career in design spans theatre, film, television, commercials, and themed entertainment, with over 25 years of professional experience. Key theatre credits include costume design for Off-Broadway’s Approval Junkie at the Minetta Lane Theatre, the world premiere of Swindlers at Aurora Theatre co-produced with Broadway Factor, Start Down and Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls at Alliance Theatre—for the latter earning the 2012 Suzi Bass Award for Outstanding Costume Design of a Play—Die Fledermaus, Eurydice, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream at UGA, and regional productions like Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? at Seven Stages. Film designs feature Suits, Sundance Award-winning 2x4, and Rules of the Game; television and commercials include national spots for Toyota, BMW, McDonald’s, and Pier One Imports featuring Kirstie Alley (nominated for Costume Designers Guild Award for Excellence in Commercial Costume Design); themed entertainment encompasses Disney On Ice: Dare to Dream and SeaWorld’s A’lure: the Call of the Ocean and Electric Ocean. Early career highlights include assisting Tony Award-winning designers Willa Kim on Grease, William Ivey Long on Chicago, Desmond Heeley on The Snow Maiden, and Susan Hilferty on multiple productions. Ingermann is a member of United Scenic Artists Local 829 and the United States Institute for Theatre Technology. In 2019, he received the University of Georgia’s Sandy Beaver Excellence in Teaching Award.
