About J. Peter

J. Peter Burkholder is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Music (Musicology) in the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University Bloomington, contributing significantly to Arts and Culture through his scholarly work. He earned his A.B. from Earlham College in 1975, M.A. from the University of Chicago in 1980, and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1983. His research interests encompass twentieth-century music, Charles Ives, musical borrowing, American music, musical meaning, analysis, and music history pedagogy. At Indiana University, he has advised eighteen completed Ph.D. dissertations in musicology and music theory, as well as twenty Doctor of Music documents in performance.

Burkholder's major publications include Listening to Charles Ives: Variations on His America (2021), All Made of Tunes: Charles Ives and the Uses of Musical Borrowing (1995), Charles Ives: The Ideas Behind the Music (1985), and as lead author of A History of Western Music, tenth edition (with Donald Jay Grout and Claude V. Palisca), and the Norton Anthology of Western Music, eighth edition (with Claude V. Palisca, 2019). He has also edited Charles Ives and His World and co-edited Charles Ives and the Classical Tradition. His articles appear in prestigious journals such as the Journal of the American Musicological Society, Journal of Musicology, and 19th-Century Music, as well as Grove Music Online and other Grove dictionaries. Burkholder has received numerous awards, including honorary membership in the American Musicological Society (2010, youngest recipient), the Alfred Einstein Award, two Irving Lowens Awards from the Society for American Music, two Deems Taylor Awards from ASCAP, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for American Music (2024). He has held leadership positions as President and Vice-President of the American Musicological Society, President of the Charles Ives Society, and board member of the College Music Society. His writings have been translated into Japanese, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Korean, Chinese, and Arabic, underscoring his influence in the field.
