James Guthrie is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Accounting and Corporate Governance, Faculty of Business and Economics at Macquarie University. Previously serving as Distinguished Professor of Accounting from 1995 to 2018, he has built a distinguished career in accounting education spanning more than 35 years, holding positions at various Australian and Italian universities. Between 2008 and 2017, Guthrie was Head of Academic Relations at Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, where he fostered engagement between accounting academics and stakeholders in the Australian and New Zealand higher education sectors, delivering thought leadership to advance the accounting profession.
Guthrie is a joint founding editor and long-standing editor since 1988 of the prestigious interdisciplinary journal Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal. His research focuses on accounting education, interdisciplinary accounting, public sector transformations, corporate social disclosure, intellectual capital, performance measurement systems, organizational innovation, biodiversity management, and changes in tertiary education. With over 407 research outputs, including 180 journal articles, 20 books, and 45 book chapters, his work has garnered more than 21,000 citations on Google Scholar. Among his most influential publications are "Intellectual capital literature review: Measurement, reporting and management" (2000, with R. Petty), "Corporate social reporting: A rebuttal of legitimacy theory" (1989, with L.D. Parker), "Using content analysis as a research method to inquire into intellectual capital reporting" (2004, with R. Petty, K. Yongvanich, and F. Ricceri), and "The Routledge Companion to Intellectual Capital" (2018, edited with J. Dumay, F. Ricceri, and C. Nielsen). He has led numerous research projects, such as those on global biodiversity management and innovation measurement in Australian organizations.
Guthrie's contributions have been recognized with awards including the John Perrin Prize in 1998 and 1999, Editor of the Year in 1993, and Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence in 2006, 2009, and 2018. He holds the honor of Member of the Order of Australia (AM). Additionally, he has edited the Academic Leadership Series from 2010 to 2017 and contributed to policy impacts, academic networks, and public discourse on accounting and higher education issues through 45 press/media appearances.
