Jane Lawrence is affiliated with the School of Architecture and Built Environment in the College of Creative Arts, Design and Humanities at Adelaide University. Currently on academic reorientation leave until April 2021, she is engaged in consultancy work for community groups. Her distinguished career at the University of South Australia includes serving as Head of School, Art, Architecture and Design from 2018 to 2020, Associate Head of School Academic from 2014 to 2017, and Program Director for Interior Architecture from 2009 to 2014. Lawrence's research focuses on domesticity and the everyday, gastronomy and design, healthy communities, aged care, and studio teaching pedagogies, with dual emphases in design pedagogy and food and design alliances developed collaboratively with Rachel Hurst.
Lawrence has been recognized with multiple awards for teaching excellence. These include the 2011 Supported Academic Teaching Award, the University of South Australia Scholarly Teaching Award, and three joint awards with Rachel Hurst: the 2002 UniSA Excellence in Teaching Award, the 1999 UniSA Supported Academic Teaching Award, and the 1998 Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design Inaugural Innovative Teaching and Learning Award. She has also received Supported Researcher Awards in 2011, 2010, and 2008, along with a 2017 HEPPP grant for creative workshops in low socio-economic status schools in remote South Australia and an SSAF grant for peer-to-peer orientation materials for new students. Her publications span journals, book chapters, and conference papers. Notable works include "Homeland: returning, remembering, reimagining" (Marmalade, 2016, with J. Cys), "A place at the table: interiors and the everyday" (Interiors: design, architecture, culture, 2013, with J. Cys), "McConnell Residence by Hassell, McConnell & Partners" (The forever house, 2014), and "Some things should be universal 24/7: cultures of care in design education" (ACUADS conference, 2016, with A. Wallace). Lawrence has led eight community-based consultancy projects incorporating research, sustainability, and best practices, often involving students. She has exhibited over 20 creative works nationally and internationally and maintains an ongoing professional interior design practice through research and industry projects.
