About Jared

Dr. Jared Miles is a Senior Lecturer and Director of Indigenous Engagement in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences within the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Queensland. A proud Yuwi man and pharmacist, he earned his Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) from UQ in 2012. Following a period as a community pharmacist, he pursued a Doctor of Philosophy in pharmaceutical sciences at UQ, completing it in 2021. His doctoral research centered on the discovery of small molecule cholinesterase inhibitors as potential treatments for Alzheimer’s disease through virtual screening methodologies, detailed in his thesis titled 'Discovery of small molecule cholinesterase inhibitors as potential treatments for Alzheimer’s disease using virtual screening'. During his PhD, Miles tutored numerous pharmacy courses, fostering his interest in teaching and leading to his current academic role. He also serves as a clinical and research pharmacist at the Institute of Urban Indigenous Health and is an affiliate lecturer at the UQ Poche Centre for Indigenous Health.

Miles' academic interests encompass culturally safe and effective pharmacy practice, new technologies for pharmaceutical development and delivery—particularly 3D printing for personalised medicines—and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing. Key research outputs include '3D printing tablets for high-precision dose titration of caffeine' (International Journal of Pharmaceutics, 2023), '3D printed tablets for personalised dose titration of prednisone using selective laser sintering' (International Journal of Pharmaceutics, 2025), 'Clinical translation of 3D printed pharmaceuticals' (Nature Reviews Bioengineering, 2024), 'Discovery of drug-like acetylcholinesterase inhibitors by rapid virtual screening of a 6.9 million compound database' (Chemical Biology and Drug Design, 2021), and 'Rapid discovery of a selective butyrylcholinesterase inhibitor using structure-based virtual screening' (Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry Letters, 2020). In 2024, he received UQ's Indigenous Educator Award for Teaching Excellence, the first since 2010, and a $149,000 Australian Research Council Discovery Indigenous grant to address gaps in Indigenous health outcomes, including nicotine metabolism during pregnancy. Through his research, teaching, and leadership, Miles contributes to advancements in personalised pharmaceutical sciences and health equity for First Nations communities.
