Dr. Jasmine Chia is a lecturer at the School of Pharmacy, Monash University Malaysia, having joined on 2 December 2024. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Medical Bioscience from Monash University Malaysia and a PhD in Human Physiology from Universiti Putra Malaysia. Her doctoral research explored the mechanisms of action of zerumbone, offering critical insights into pain modulation pathways. Prior to her current appointment, she served as a lecturer at Management and Science University, where she supervised research projects and enhanced student engagement through innovative teaching approaches. Additionally, she acted as project manager for the South East Asian Nutrition Surveys II (SEANUTS II) Malaysia, contributing to national efforts in assessing nutritional status among children.
Dr. Chia's research encompasses the interconnected fields of pain, inflammation, nutrition, and public health, with specific focus on neuropathic pain, natural product therapeutics, obesity, and metabolic disorders. Her scholarly output includes 12 research articles and reviews, among them 'Zerumbone Modulates α2A-Adrenergic, TRPV1, and NMDA NR2B Receptors Plasticity in CCI-Induced Neuropathic Pain In Vivo and LPS-Induced SH-SY5Y Neuroblastoma In Vitro Models' (Frontiers in Pharmacology, 2020), 'Triple burden of malnutrition among Malaysian children aged 6 months to 12 years: Current findings from SEANUTS II Malaysia' (Public Health Nutrition, 2023), 'Zerumbone ameliorates neuropathic pain symptoms via cannabinoid and PPAR receptors using in vivo and in silico models' (Molecules, 2021), 'Zerumbone alleviates chronic constriction injury-induced allodynia and hyperalgesia through serotonin 5-HT receptors' (Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy, 2016), and 'Enablers and Barriers to Achieving Clinical Competency among Dental Students: Lessons for Teaching and Learning' (Education in Medicine Journal, 2024). She coordinates the BPS2012 Pharmacology 2: Drug action unit and is accepting PhD students. In professional service, she is a council and executive member of the Malaysian Association for the Study of Obesity (MASO) since 2021, organizing public health initiatives, conferences, and awareness campaigns; previously Honorary Assistant Secretary at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (2021-2025); and a member of the Malaysian Society of Neurosciences. Dr. Chia has provided expert media commentary on topics such as the suitability of US dietary guidelines for Malaysians and serves as Chief Investigator on a project evaluating xylitol's inhibitory activity against nasal cavity pathogens.
