Professor Jeffrey Mahachi is a Professor in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment at the University of Johannesburg, where he serves as Head of School in Civil Engineering and the Built Environment and as Director of the Sustainable Materials and Construction Technologies (SMaCT) Research Centre. He obtained his BScEngHons from the University of Zimbabwe, followed by an MScEng in Structural Engineering from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom. He later completed a PhD in Structural Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, with his thesis focusing on the vibration behavior of composite floors, and earned a Master of Information Technology from the University of Pretoria. Prior to rejoining academia at the University of Johannesburg in 2017, Mahachi lectured at the University of Zimbabwe and the University of the Witwatersrand, worked as a Research Engineer at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, and held several executive positions at the National Home Builders Registration Council. He has contributed to engineering and construction projects involving sustainable human settlements and innovative building systems, as well as to the development of standards in the construction industry.
Mahachi is a registered Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng), a registered Construction Project Manager (Pr.CPM), and a Fellow of the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE). His research interests include construction and building innovation technologies, construction 3D printing, and structural engineering. He currently leads research funded by the Department of Science and Innovation on advanced 3D printing of houses. Mahachi serves as Chairperson of Agrément South Africa and as a Technical Advisor to the Council for GeoScience. He is passionate about developmental engineering and promoting innovation in the construction industry.
