Jeffry (Jeff) M. Netter is the Josiah Meigs Professor, Georgia Bankers Association Chair, and Professor of Finance in the Department of Finance at the University of Georgia's Terry College of Business within the field of Business & Economics. He holds a B.A. in Economics from Northwestern University (1974), M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from The Ohio State University (1976, 1980), and a J.D. from Emory University (1985) as an Olin Fellow in Law and Economics. Netter's career at UGA began in 1988 as Assistant Professor of Finance, progressing to Associate Professor (1992), full Professor (1999), C. Herman and Mary Virginia Terry Chair (2002-2012), and his current endowed professorships since 2012. He led the Department of Finance as Head from 2011 to 2023, serves as Adjunct Professor of Law at UGA since 1989, and previously held positions including Visiting Professor at University of Michigan (1991, 1993), Senior Research Scholar at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (1986-1988), and Visiting Assistant Professor at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (1981-1983).
Netter's research specializations include corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, privatization, securities regulation, insider trading, law and economics, capitalism, and public choice, with over 24,923 citations on Google Scholar. Notable publications encompass “The Choice of Private versus Public Capital Markets: Evidence from Privatizations” (Journal of Finance, 2004, with Megginson, Nash, Poulsen), “What Do Returns to Acquiring Firms Tell Us? He served as Managing Editor of the Journal of Corporate Finance (2001-2018). Major awards include the Josiah Meigs Award for Excellence in Teaching (University of Georgia, 2002), Terry College of Business Research Award (2000), Distinguished Teacher Award (1992), Hoeber Memorial Award Outstanding Article (American Business Law Journal, 2013), and University of Georgia Honors Day Teaching Awards (1991, 1992, 1996).
