About Jennifer

Associate Professor Jennifer Fraser, RN, PhD, is a full-time academic at the Susan Wakil School of Nursing and Midwifery in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. She has a clinical background in paediatric and child health nursing. Her research specializations include public health nursing, with a focus on the nurse-family relationship in home visiting programs for vulnerable families with newborns. Fraser has led randomized controlled trials demonstrating the effectiveness of nurse home visiting interventions in supporting family functioning, child development, and reducing risks of physical abuse. Her work also addresses child maltreatment, investigating factors influencing nurses' recognition, reporting, and self-efficacy in mandated reporting of suspected child abuse and neglect. She has developed and psychometrically evaluated tools such as the Reporting Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (RSCAN) scale for registered nurses and hospital-based electronic checklists for clinical assessment of child maltreatment.

Fraser's academic interests extend to upholding children's rights to express their views in healthcare, as per Article 12 of the UNCRC, factors enabling their participation, and implementation of cultural safety initiatives for Aboriginal children in paediatric hospital settings. She evaluates parenting interventions, including brief Triple P programs for families of children with chronic conditions like eczema and asthma. Previously affiliated with Queensland University of Technology and Griffith University, she has produced over 120 publications, with more than 3,900 citations on Google Scholar. Key publications include 'Parenting and conduct problems in children: Australian data and psychometric properties of the Alabama Parenting Questionnaire' (2003, 383 citations), 'A randomized, controlled trial of nurse home visiting to vulnerable families with newborns' (1999, 344 citations), 'Factors influencing child abuse and neglect recognition and reporting by nurses: A multivariate analysis' (2010, 308 citations), 'Home visiting intervention for vulnerable families with newborns: follow-up results of a randomized controlled trial' (2000, 182 citations), and 'Parenting interventions for childhood chronic illness: A review and recommendations for intervention design and delivery' (2015, 175 citations). She co-authored the textbook 'Paediatric Nursing in Australia and New Zealand'. Her research impacts nursing practice, education, and child protection policies.
