Jennifer Hall is a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics Education in the Faculty of Education at Monash University, Clayton campus. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy in 2013 with a thesis titled 'Societal Views of Mathematics and Mathematicians and their Influence on Elementary Students,' exploring elementary students' views of mathematics influenced by parents, teachers, and media. Prior to joining Monash, she was a Post-Doctoral Scholar in Mathematics Education at the University of Calgary, working on the SSHRC-funded 'Mathematics Experiences, Images, and Identities' project, which investigated students' school experiences shaping their mathematical images and identities. At Monash, Jennifer teaches pre-service teachers at primary and secondary levels, preparing them for mathematics and numeracy demands. She co-led a 2020-2021 project for the Department of Education and Training Victoria, creating numeracy lesson plans for secondary curricula, and collaborated with Dr. Sharyn Livy on resources for the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority related to Mathematics Curriculum Version 2.0. Her research centers on students' relationships with mathematics, influenced by in- and out-of-school experiences, with a focus on gendered relationships, gender research methodologies in mathematics education, university mathematics students' program experiences, and pre-service teachers' numeracy views including the LANTITE test. Research areas include maths and science education, gender studies, media studies, qualitative methodologies, and diversity and inclusion, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals such as Quality Education and Gender Equality.
Jennifer has produced 89 research outputs, including 36 conference papers, 24 articles, and 13 book chapters, with 376 citations. Key publications are 'A tale of two students: unpacking undergraduate mathematics students’ mathematical identities using the Listening Guide' (2025, Educational Studies in Mathematics, with T. Robinson, J. Flegg, J. Wilkinson), 'Online mathematics “Self-Help Kiosks” to support pre-service teachers' (2025, in Teaching and Learning Mathematics Online, with H. Forgasz, S. Zmood), 'Research on gender and mathematics: exploring new and future directions' (2023, with J. Rossi Becker), and '“If you’re a dude, you’re a chick, whatever the hell in between, you need to know about maths”: the Australian and Canadian general public’s views of gender and mathematics' (2023). Awards include the Monash Student Association Outstanding Teaching Award for the Faculty of Education (2015) and Commendation for Industry Collaboration (2024, with S. Livy). She has served as guest editor for Mathematics Education Research Journal (2022, with E. Norén), editor-in-chief for Mathematical Association of Victoria Annual Conference (2019, with H. Tan), and associate editor for Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia conference (2017). Jennifer accepts PhD students and participates in projects like Numeracy Across the Curriculum.
