Professor Jeremy Tavaré is Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at the University of Bristol, a role he has held since August 2023. He previously served as the founder Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences, which launched in August 2018 and encompasses the Schools of Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience, and Psychological Science.

Jeremy Tavaré studied Biochemistry at the University of Bristol, earning a BSc in 1982 and a PhD in 1986. He completed an MRC Travelling Fellowship at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Dallas and returned to Bristol as a British Diabetic Association Senior Research Fellow from 1991 to 2001. He was appointed Professor of Biochemistry in 1999. His research focuses on the role of protein kinases in glucose transport and insulin action, as well as in cancer. He co-founded the cancer drug-discovery company ProXara Biotechnology Ltd in 2001. Tavaré has held multiple leadership positions with the Medical Research Council, including Deputy Chair of the Physiological Systems and Clinical Science Board (2003–06), Chair of the Non-Clinical Training and Careers panel (2016–20), and Chair of the Doctoral Training Programme awards panel (2021). He currently chairs the Scientific Advisory Board of the MRC London Institute of Medical Science. He has also served as Director of Bristol’s MRC Cell Imaging Facility, Chairman of the Bristol Proteomics Facility, Faculty Research Director for the Faculty of Medical and Veterinary Sciences (2010–12), founder Director of the Elizabeth Blackwell Institute for Health Research, and Co-director of the Wellcome Trust-funded GW4 Clinical Academic PhD Training Programme.
