Professor Jerry Wong serves as Professor of Piano and Head of Keyboard at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music within the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music at the University of Melbourne. He also holds the position of Associate Dean (International) for the faculty. Wong earned his Bachelor of Music from Indiana University, Master of Music from the Peabody Conservatory, and Doctor of Musical Arts from the Manhattan School of Music, studying under distinguished teachers including Menahem Pressler, Ann Schein, and Byron Janis. Prior to joining the University of Melbourne in 2019, he was Professor of Piano at Kent State University in Ohio from 2003 to 2019, where he developed a notable class of international students.
A Steinway Artist, Wong has performed extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia at venues such as the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, National Concert Hall of Taipei, National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., Opera City Hall in Tokyo, PianoForte in Chicago, Severance Hall in Cleveland, Shriver Hall in Baltimore, and Weill Recital Hall in New York City. His performances and interviews have been broadcast on Finnish National Radio, Nippon Television, WCLV in Cleveland, and David Dubal’s Reflections from the Keyboard on WQXR. Wong has released three solo recordings on the MSR Classics label: works by Sergei Prokofiev, Of Motion and Dance – Piano Music of Claude Debussy (2018), and Of Love and Longing – Piano Music of Franz Liszt. He has also recorded chamber music with clarinettist Dennis Nygren on Albany Records, flutist Derek Jones on MOVE Records, and soprano Melissa Davis on two discs of song cycles by Jake Heggie. An active chamber musician, he has appeared at festivals including the Josef Gingold Chamber Music Festival, Killington Music Festival, Mimir Chamber Music Festival, and Pacific Music Festival. Wong is a recognized pedagogue, presenting masterclasses at institutions such as Cleveland Institute of Music, Indiana University, Northwestern University, and University of Michigan, as well as in Australia, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Italy, Korea, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, and Taiwan. He has delivered lecture recitals for the Music Teachers National Association, National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy, Frances Clark Pedagogy Center, and World Piano Teachers Association. As International Column Editor for The Piano Magazine (formerly Clavier Companion), he contributes regularly to keyboard pedagogy literature. His scholarly works include analyses such as Francis Poulenc's Early Writing: A Critical Analysis of Trois Pieces (1918) and Mouvements Perpetuels (1919), and George Rochberg's Nach Bach and Four Short Sonatas.
