Dr. Jesse Popp is an assistant professor in the Department of Geography and Environment at Mount Allison University. She holds a PhD in Boreal Ecology from Laurentian University, where she was the first Indigenous student to complete a doctorate specializing in the natural sciences. In 2019, Dr. Popp was appointed as the Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Indigenous Environmental Science at Mount Allison University. Her work specializes in wildlife ecology and Indigenous science, and she collaborates with researchers and Indigenous communities across Canada to investigate the impacts of environmental change on ecological processes and wildlife populations.
Dr. Popp weaves Indigenous and Western ways of knowing in her research program, which explores disturbance impacts on wildlife diversity, demographics, and distributions, as well as the consequences of wildlife population fluctuations on Indigenous traditional ways of life. She teaches courses at Mount Allison with a focus on Indigenous content, including Indigenous Peoples: Ecology, Science. Dr. Popp has been recognized with the FutureReadyNB Faculty Excellence Award for her contributions to experiential learning and Indigenous knowledge integration. Her research program at the university involves direct student participation in projects, including workshops and the establishment of Indigenous gardens on campus featuring plants significant to Indigenous communities such as the Mi’kmaw.
