Dr Jessica Nolan is a Senior Lecturer (Teaching and Research) in the Curtin School of Allied Health, Faculty of Health Sciences, at Curtin University. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy from Curtin University in 2006, a Graduate Diploma in Neurological Rehabilitation from the University of Western Australia in 2010, and a PhD from Edith Cowan University in 2023. Her PhD thesis, 'Post-stroke lateropulsion – pushing for a greater understanding of rehabilitation and recovery,' was awarded the Edith Cowan University School of Medical and Health Sciences Research Medal. Prior to her academic career, Nolan worked as a stroke rehabilitation physiotherapist, including at Osborne Park Hospital, where she served as a senior physiotherapist and coordinator of stroke services.
Nolan's research specializes in post-stroke lateropulsion, its impact on rehabilitation outcomes, and strategies to improve stroke recovery. She has published 13 peer-reviewed articles, nine as first author, including 'The association between contraversive lateropulsion and outcomes post stroke: A systematic review' (2021), 'Post-stroke lateropulsion rehabilitation outcomes: a retrospective analysis' (2021), 'Clinical practice recommendations for management of lateropulsion after stroke determined by a Delphi expert panel' (2023), 'Lateropulsion is a predictor of falls during inpatient stroke rehabilitation' (2024), and 'Lateropulsion resolution and outcomes up to one year post-stroke: a prospective, longitudinal cohort study' (2024). Her publications have received over 150 citations. Nolan has earned awards such as the 2022 University of Notre Dame Australia Aspire Award, 2021 Peter Bladin New Investigator Award from the Stroke Society of Australasia, and first place poster at the 2018 Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital Research Week. She serves as Secretary of the Australia and New Zealand Stroke Organisation Emerging Stroke Clinician Scientist Committee, member of the Stroke Foundation Living Guidelines Physiotherapy Working Party, and participant in the World Stroke Organization Future Leaders Program, advancing equitable access to stroke rehabilitation.
