Jiang He, M.D., M.S., Ph.D., serves as Professor and Chair of Epidemiology at the UT Southwestern O'Donnell School of Public Health and as Professor of Internal Medicine and Neurology at the UT Southwestern Medical School. He holds the S. Roger and Carolyn P. Horchow Chair in Cardiac Research, in Honor of Jere H. Mitchell, M.D. His academic background includes a medical degree from Peking Union Medical College in 1995, a doctoral degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1996, and a master’s degree from Tulane University in 2004. Prior to joining UT Southwestern, Dr. He held faculty positions at Tulane University, where he served as Chair of the Department of Epidemiology for two decades.
Dr. He is a globally recognized leader in epidemiological, clinical, and translational research on cardiometabolic and brain health, with a focus on the epidemiology and prevention of cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, stroke, and dementia. He has served as principal investigator or co-investigator on more than 50 major NIH research grants and has authored over 800 scientific articles, including publications in the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, The Lancet, and Nature Medicine. His work includes landmark studies on global disparities in obesity, hypertension, and diabetes, as well as large-scale clinical trials on blood pressure control and implementation strategies for hypertension management in underserved populations. Dr. He mentors numerous students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty. His honors include election to the National Academy of Medicine in 2023, the American Heart Association Distinguished Scientist Award in 2024, the Abraham Lilienfeld Award from the American College of Epidemiology in 2022, the Peter Sleight Excellence Award in Hypertension Clinical Research Trials in 2024, and the Tulane University Research Hall of Fame Award in 2021.
