Professor Joanna Barbousas is Pro Vice-Chancellor, Education, Impact and Innovation and Dean of the School of Education at La Trobe University, where she also holds the position of Professor of Teacher Education. She previously served as State Head of Education and Director of Professional Learning at Australian Catholic University. Educated at the University of New South Wales, Professor Barbousas holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts, a Master of Fine Arts, a Bachelor of Education in Art Education, a Graduate Certificate in Education Research, and a PhD. With more than 25 years of experience as a teacher and academic in New South Wales and Victoria, her work centres on education policy, teacher practice, and the formation of educational knowledge during periods of change, with a particular emphasis on new visions in teacher education and the role of partnerships and sector collaborations in elevating the status of the teaching profession.
Professor Barbousas is an invited member of government steering committees, advisory groups, and expert panels, and she serves as President of the Victorian Council of Deans of Education. She has led major funding initiatives, including the successful award of over 14 million dollars for the High Achievers Teachers Program, supported by the Commonwealth Government and the State Government of Victoria, which delivers an innovative employment-based teacher education pathway for regional, rural, and hard-to-staff schools. She was also instrumental in securing 2.5 million dollars over five years from the Bertalli Foundation to support the university’s science of learning programs, including the establishment of evidence-based reading and writing clinics at La Trobe’s Bendigo and Bundoora campuses and the development of regional hubs for schools excelling in the science of learning.
