Johannes von Alvensleben, MD, serves as Associate Professor of Pediatrics-Cardiology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. He obtained his Bachelor of Science from Pacific Lutheran University in 2002 and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Washington School of Medicine in 2007. His clinical training commenced with an internship at Seattle Children's Hospital in 2007, followed by a residency in Pediatrics there in 2010. He then pursued a fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology at the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers Program in 2014, and an advanced fellowship in Cardiac Electrophysiology in 2015. Board-certified in Pediatric Cardiology and by the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners in Pediatric Electrophysiology since 2015, Dr. von Alvensleben holds leadership positions as Director of Electrophysiology and Director of the Adult Congenital Arrhythmia Program at Children's Hospital Colorado.
Dr. von Alvensleben specializes in the care of children with heart rhythm disturbances and adults with congenital heart disease who have rhythm concerns. His management approaches include medications, cardiac ablation, and cardiac device implantation. His research interests center on the subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator in children and adults with congenital heart disease, as well as electrical dyssynchrony and its effects on heart function. He has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, including "Clinical Predictors of Recurrent Cavotricuspid Isthmus Flutter After Catheter Ablation in Patients With Dextro-Transposition of the Great Arteries" (Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology, 2025), "Pediatric Electrophysiology in 2024: End of the Year Review" (Journal of Innovations in Cardiac Rhythm Management, 2025), "Transesophageal 3-dimensional echocardiographic guidance for pacemaker lead placement" (Heart Rhythm, 2025), "Ventricular stimulation in patients with myotonic dystrophy type 1" (2024), "Myocardial strain-curve deformation patterns after Fontan operation" (Scientific Reports, 2023), and "Short-coupled premature ventricular beats leading to ventricular fibrillation" (Heart Rhythm Case Reports, 2020). These contributions, exceeding 90 publications with over 500 citations, have advanced understanding in pediatric electrophysiology. Dr. von Alvensleben has been honored with the Patient-Family Experience Excellence in Patient Care Award from Children's Hospital Colorado in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022, as well as the Pediatric Cardiology Fellows Teaching Award in 2016. He is a member of the Heart Rhythm Society and the Pediatric and Congenital Electrophysiology Society and is fluent in English and German.
