John A. Batsis, MD, is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Geriatric Medicine at the UNC School of Medicine and an Associate Professor in the Department of Nutrition at the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He joined the UNC faculty in 2020 after serving on the faculty at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth from 2008 to 2020. Dr. Batsis received a BSc in Physiology from McGill University in 1997 and an MD from the University of Dublin, Trinity College in 2002. He completed residency training in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at Mayo Clinic Rochester, along with a Certificate in Clinical and Translational Research from the Mayo Graduate School of Medical Education.
Dr. Batsis is a clinician and health services researcher whose work focuses on the relationships between obesity and sarcopenia in older adults and their impact on physical function, frailty, and mortality. His research develops multicomponent diet and exercise interventions and leverages technology such as telemedicine, remote monitoring, and wearable devices to improve health outcomes in older adults with multimorbidity. He provides clinical care to older adults in outpatient and nursing home settings. Dr. Batsis has authored over 130 peer-reviewed publications, including studies on weight-loss interventions augmented by technology and systematic reviews on dietary supplements for weight loss. He holds fellowships from the American College of Physicians, American Geriatrics Society, The Obesity Society, and Gerontological Society of America. His honors include a Best Paper Award from the International Conference on Body Area Networks in 2019, a TidesWell Leadership Development Program Scholarship, a Presidential Poster Award from the American Geriatrics Society in 2022, and service awards from the American Geriatrics Society. He serves on editorial boards and research committees for professional organizations and is funded by the National Institute on Aging.
