John Borkowski is Professor Emeritus of Statistics in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Montana State University, having served on the Mathematics faculty for 33 years from 1991 until his retirement in 2024. He earned a B.A. in Mathematics from Rutgers University in 1980, an M.A. in Mathematics from Pennsylvania State University in 1982, an M.A. in Statistics from Rutgers University in 1987, and a Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Delaware in 1992. Borkowski began at Montana State University as an assistant professor of statistics in 1991, received tenure and promotion to associate professor in 1997, and was promoted to professor in 2004. He chaired the Graduate Program Committee in the Department of Mathematical Sciences since 2000, taught over 30 different courses, advised 22 Ph.D. students, and mentored more than 50 M.S. students. He also served as faculty mentor for the African Society at Montana State University.
Borkowski's research focuses on response surface methodology, experimental design, sampling design, and statistical quality control, areas in which his work has had substantial influence. He authored over 90 peer-reviewed journal articles and delivered more than 100 conference and seminar presentations. Key publications include 'Spherical Prediction-Variance Properties of Central Composite and Box-Behnken Designs' (Technometrics, 1995), 'Designs of Mixed Resolution for Process Robustness Studies' (Technometrics, 1997), and 'Using a Genetic Algorithm to Generate Small Exact Response Surface Designs' (Journal of Probability and Statistical Science, 2003). Internationally, he has been a visiting professor at Thammasat University in Thailand since 2005, earning an honorary doctorate in Statistics there in 2013, and served as a Fulbright Lecturer in 2008 and World Bank consultant in Vietnam. His honors include the 2006 College of Letters and Science Distinguished Professorship, 2011 Mortar Board Professor of the Month, and 2014 Provost’s Award for Graduate Research and Creative Mentoring.
