John R. Drake is an Associate Professor of Management Information Systems and Director of the Center for AI in Business at East Carolina University’s College of Business. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics with honors from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville in 1998 and a Ph.D. in Management of Information Technology and Innovation from Auburn University in 2008. Prior to his academic career, Drake taught chemistry at the high school level and worked in web development, assisting small businesses in establishing and improving their online presence. He joined East Carolina University in 2011 as an Assistant Professor and has since advanced to Associate Professor.
Drake’s scholarship explores decision-making processes in information systems, including social media privacy, search strategies, online education, business ethics, virtual team performance, trust, and risk. His recent research shifts toward applied artificial intelligence, focusing on AI auditing, education, and governance. With more than 850 citations from over 20 publications in leading journals such as IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Information Technology Education, and AIS Transactions on Human-Computer Interaction, key works include his book eCommerce: A Stakeholder Approach (Prospect Press, 2019); “Global virtual team performance: The effect of coordination effectiveness, trust, and team cohesion” (with R. Paul and H. Liang, 2016); “Five Principles for MOOC Design: With a Case Study” (with M.T. O’Hara and E. Seeman, 2015); and “A critical analysis of active learning and an alternative pedagogical framework for introductory information systems courses” (2012). Drake received the East Carolina University Scholar-Teacher Award for his debiasing framework in problem-based learning projects. He developed the College of Business’s first AI course, “Leading Organizations Through the AI Revolution,” and created an AI-powered engine for curriculum personalization.
