John Kettle is a Clinical Professor of Law at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey - Newark, where he serves as Director of the Intellectual Property Law Clinic and Judge John W. Bissell Scholar. Specializing in intellectual property law, including copyright, trademarks, entertainment law, advanced intellectual property, and related areas such as sports and arts law, he earned his B.S. magna cum laude from Bloomfield College and his J.D. from Rutgers School of Law-Newark. Kettle joined the Rutgers Law School faculty in 1991 as an adjunct professor and transitioned to a full-time faculty position in 2000. From 1993 until his academic leave in 2000, he worked as counsel to Stryker, Tams & Dill LLP. Earlier in his career, he served as an adjunct professor and visiting professor at Seton Hall Law School and was associated with the Prudential Insurance Company of America. He directs the Rutgers Intellectual Property Law Clinic, supervising student work in intellectual property and entertainment law, and teaches doctrinal courses in Trademark Law, Sports and Entertainment Law, Patent Law, Intellectual Property Law, Copyright Law, Contracts, and Clinical Legal Education. Kettle also acts as faculty advisor to the Rutgers Computer & Technology Law Journal and the Intellectual Property Law Society, as well as the Entertainment & Sports Law Society.
Professor Kettle previously chaired the New York State Bar Association's Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law Section and the New Jersey State Bar Association's Entertainment and Arts Law Committee. He served on the editorial board of the New Jersey Law Journal and has lectured for the New Jersey Institute of Continuing Legal Education and the Practicing Law Institute on topics in entertainment and intellectual property law. His publications address intellectual property, entertainment, arts, and sports law. Through his clinical supervision, teaching, and leadership roles, Kettle contributes significantly to legal education in the Law faculty at Rutgers Newark, preparing students for practice in complex intellectual property matters.
