About John

John Orchard AM is an Adjunct Professor in the Sydney School of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health, at the University of Sydney. He is a sport and exercise physician with over 20 years of experience, having obtained his medical degree (MBBS) from the University of Melbourne in 1989. His qualifications include BA, PhD, MD, FACSEP, FFSEM(UK), FACSM, and CCPU. Orchard's research focuses on sports injury epidemiology, non-surgical management of muscle and tendon injuries such as Achilles tendinopathy, hamstring tendinopathy, and patellar tendinopathy, as well as sports cardiology.

Throughout his career, Orchard has held key appointments including Chief Medical Officer for Cricket Australia since 2014, team doctor for Cricket NSW since 2008, Sydney Sixers since 2011, and the Australian Cricket Team on multiple international tours. Previously, he served as team doctor for the Sydney Roosters Rugby League Club (1998–2013), NSW State of Origin Rugby League team (2000–2006), and Sydney Swans Australian Football Club (1994–1997). In recognition of his contributions, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2020 for significant service to sports medicine, particularly cricket. A major achievement is the development of the Orchard Sports Injury and Illness Classification System (OSIICS), now in version 15, used globally for injury surveillance in cricket, Australian football, rugby union, soccer, and tennis, and incorporated into four commercial injury management systems. His influential publications include 'Football injuries in Australia at the élite level' (Medical Journal of Australia, 1993), 'Epidemiology of injuries in the Australian Football League, seasons 1997-2000' (British Journal of Sports Medicine, 2002), 'Intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors for muscle strains in Australian football' (American Journal of Sports Medicine, 2001), 'Results of 2 Decades of Injury Surveillance and Public Release of Data in the Australian Football League' (American Journal of Sports Medicine, 2013), and contributions to consensus statements like the Munich consensus on muscle injuries (British Journal of Sports Medicine, 2013). With over 26,000 citations and an h-index of 60 on Google Scholar, Orchard's work has profoundly impacted injury prevention and athlete health management in elite sports.
