Professor John Vassiliadis serves as Professor of Emergency Medicine in the Northern Clinical School at the University of Sydney. He obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Sydney in 1993 and holds Fellowship of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEM). In his clinical role, he is a Senior Staff Specialist in the Emergency Department at Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH). He holds key educational leadership positions, including Director of Prevocational Training at RNSH, Chair of Prevocational Education and Training for the Health Education and Training Institute (HETI) New South Wales, and Chair of the Clinical Skills Committee at Sydney Medical School. Vassiliadis is recognized for his commitment to mentoring and teaching junior doctors and medical students, and he contributes to conferences such as SMACC as a speaker on emergency medicine topics.
His academic interests center on airway management, trauma, resuscitation, intubation, critical care medicine, emergency management, sepsis, medical simulation, and military medicine. He is affiliated with the Discipline of Emergency Medicine in the Northern Clinical School and has co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications based on data from the Australian and New Zealand Emergency Department Airway Registry (ANZEDAR). Notable works include "Bed tilt and ramp positions are associated with increased first-pass success of adult endotracheal intubation in the emergency department: A registry study" (2023), "Comparison of supine and upright face-to-face cadaver intubation" (2022), "Current airway management practices after a failed intubation attempt in Australian and New Zealand emergency departments" (2021), "Apnoeic oxygenation was associated with decreased desaturation rates during rapid sequence intubation in multiple Australian and New Zealand emergency departments" (2020), "Emergency airway management in Australian and New Zealand emergency departments: A multicentre descriptive study of 3710 emergency intubations" (2017), "The Royal North Shore Hospital Emergency Department airway registry: Closing the audit loop" (2015), "Comparison of the C-MAC video laryngoscope with direct Macintosh laryngoscopy in the emergency department" (2015), "Identifying incidents of suboptimal care during paediatric emergencies: An observational study utilising in situ and simulation centre scenarios" (2013), and "Prospective observational study of the practice of endotracheal intubation in the emergency department of a tertiary hospital in Sydney, Australia" (2012). These publications have collectively received 408 citations. Furthermore, Vassiliadis serves as a Captain in the Royal Australian Navy, honored for his service as a naval medical officer.
