John Warwicker-Le Breton is the Enterprise Professor of Graphic Design at the Victorian College of the Arts in the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music at the University of Melbourne, a position to which he was appointed in 2017. He has garnered international recognition as co-founder of the multi-award-winning multidisciplinary creative studio tomato. Born in London in 1955, his academic background includes a B.A. from Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts (1973-1977) and a master's degree in electronic interactive media from Birmingham Polytechnic (1980-1981). Early in his career, he founded the studio Da Gama with Alex McDowell (1981-1984), served as Head of Design and Video at A&M Records in London (1986-1988), and as Head of Design at the film and video production company Vivid (1988-1991). In 1991, he co-founded tomato alongside Steve Baker, Dirk van Dooren, Simon Taylor, Graham Wood, and Rick and Karl from Underworld, exploring language, typography, and digital media through collaborative projects.
After relocating to Melbourne in 2006, Warwicker-Le Breton took on roles including Adjunct Professor of Architecture at RMIT University (2007), Professor of Communication Design at Monash Art, Design and Architecture (2012-2014), and Visiting Professor at Zokei University in Tokyo (2012-present). He has served as consultant to Demos think-tank (1999-2005), advisor to the British Council's European Design Board (2000-2002), and external assessor for programs at institutions such as Central Saint Martins, Royal College of Art, and University of East London. Notable awards include the Royal Academy Drawing Prize for Natural History (1973), multiple German Art Directors Club awards (1993, 1995, 1998), D&AD Silver for Sony Connected Identity (2001), Tokyo Type Directors Club Special Prize for The Floating World, Ukiyo-e (2010), and Fellowship of the Royal Society of the Arts (2022). Key publications and design works feature monographs like Process: A Tomato Project (1996), Mudlarks (1997), The Typographic Mind (2009), One Thousand Fathoms Deep (2010), and Brett Whiteley Catalogue Raisonné, 1955-1992 (2020). As Design Editor of Art + Australia, he has influenced design discourse, complemented by extensive global workshops and editorial contributions.
