About Jonathan

Professor Jonathan Carter is a Conjoint Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. Holding qualifications MBBS, DipRACOG, FRANZCOG, FACS, MS from the University of Minnesota, MD from the University of New South Wales, and CGO, he has over 40 years of medical experience, specializing in obstetrics and gynaecology since 1990 and as a certified gynaecological oncologist since 1994. He trained at the University of Minnesota from 1990 to 1996. His career encompasses leadership roles including former Head of Gynaecological Oncology at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, current Clinical Director of Women’s Health, Neonatology and Paediatrics for Sydney Local Health District, Director of Women and Babies at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and Clinical Executive Sponsor of the Sydney Institute for Women, Children and their Families. He served as Past President of the Australian Society of Gynaecological Oncologists, chaired the RPA Medical Staff Council and Sydney Local Health District Medical Staff Executive Council, and participates in committees such as the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Australian Gynaecological Cancer Foundation.

Professor Carter's research specializations include gynaecologic oncology, laparotomy, human papillomavirus, abdominal surgery, gynaecological surgery, cervical cancer prevention, and screening. He has authored or co-authored 176 publications, 3 books, and 14 book chapters. Notable publications are 'Mendelian randomisation study of height and body mass index as modifiers of ovarian cancer risk in 22,588 BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers' (2019), 'Safety of laparoscopy in cervical cancer' (2019), 'Vulvar granular cell tumour in a recently post-partum woman: a case report' (2022), and 'First uterine transplant case at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital' (2023). His awards include the Virginia K. Pierce Award from the Society of Memorial Gynecologic Oncologists at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre, Young Investigators Award from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Viertel Clinical Investigatorship Award and Grant, and Turnbull Scholarship from the University of Melbourne. His work has advanced treatments and research in gynaecological cancers.
