Jonathan Li is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering at Monash University, where he serves as Deputy Associate Dean Education (First Year Studies). He holds a PhD in Telecommunications from the University of Melbourne and a double undergraduate degree completed in 2001 from the University of Western Australia: Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (First Class Honours) and Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Information Technology Systems. Prior to joining Monash in 2010, Li worked at Telstra Research Laboratories and a startup company on optical fibre and wireless network optimisation.
His research specializations encompass engineering education, technology in education via mobile and web applications, engineering outreach, and increasing diversity in engineering. Li has led projects such as Online Sign Language Dictionary and Platform: Language for All (2014–2015, Primary Chief Investigator), Lightboards everywhere (2018–2019, Chief Investigator), STEMMing Effective Study Strategies (2020–2021, Chief Investigator), and Catch me before I fail: An Early Intervention Framework (2022–2024, Associate Investigator). Key publications include "A pilot study; academic interpretation and student sights on the quantitative tool" (2022, Australasian Association for Engineering Education), "Mixed methods evaluation to explore participant experiences of a pilot randomized trial to facilitate self-management of people living with stroke: Inspiring virtual enabled resources following vascular events (iVERVE)" (2022, Health Expectations), "An investigation of children's, parents' and teachers' perceptions of engineers and engineering" (2021, REES AAEE), and "Applying the university's Learning Management System (LMS) data to validate the quantitative framework for evaluating student workload" (2020, AAEE). In 2024, he received the Dean's Teaching Award for Programs that Enhance Learning and a Special Commendation in the Vice-Chancellor's Award for Programs that Enhance Learning as part of teams. Li is named on a submitted Australian Provisional Patent (2005) for “A Proxy Process and System.” He contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 and accepts PhD students.
