Jonathan Sperry obtained his BSc (Hons) in 2002 and PhD in 2006 from the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom, where his doctoral work was supervised by Professor Chris Moody. He then completed a postdoctoral research position with Professor Margaret Brimble at the University of Auckland, after which he joined the institution as a lecturer in the School of Chemical Sciences in 2009. He advanced through the academic ranks to Senior Lecturer and subsequently Associate Professor.
Sperry’s research focused on organic and sustainable synthesis, medicinal chemistry, heterocyclic chemistry, natural products chemistry, and green chemistry. His contributions include numerous peer-reviewed publications, such as reviews on natural products containing nitrogen–nitrogen bonds (2013), mushroom-derived indole alkaloids (2017), and pyridine alkaloids with activity in the central nervous system (2020). Additional works address the synthesis of benzannulated spiroketal natural products (2010) and sustainable approaches to nitrogen compounds from chitin (2020). He held a Rutherford Discovery Fellowship and served as a PhD advisor in the School of Chemical Sciences. Sperry was previously affiliated with the Centre for Green Chemical Science at the University of Auckland.
