About Jonathon

Jonathon Homeister, MD, PhD, is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, contributing to the Medicine faculty. His clinical interests include cardiovascular pathology, autopsy pathology, and forensic pathology. Homeister's research centers on the glycobiology of leukocyte adhesion in atherosclerosis, examining glycoprotein- and glycolipid-dependent processes in the pathogenesis of inflammatory vascular disease. He investigates how selectin-type adhesion molecules and their receptors facilitate leukocyte recruitment essential for atherosclerotic lesion development and progression, with particular emphasis on alpha(1,3)-fucosyltransferase IV and VII in synthesizing functional selectin ligands for leukocyte homing. Additionally, his work explores the glycobiology of thrombosis and hemostasis, focusing on P-selectin and its fucosylated ligand PSGL-1 as links between coagulation and inflammation, and the mechanisms by which fucosyltransferase activity modulates thrombosis susceptibility independent of traditional selectin ligand functions.

Homeister has published extensively on vascular inflammation and thrombosis, with key papers including "Shigatoxin triggers thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura in mice" (Journal of Clinical Investigation, 2005), "Genetics of atherosclerosis in murine models" (Current Atherosclerosis Reports, 2007), "Rib fractures and death from deletion of osteoblast β-catenin in adult mice" (Bone, 2013), and "Rivaroxaban does not affect growth of human pancreatic tumors in mice" (Thrombosis Research, 2019). His contributions extend to education and leadership, earning the American Society for Investigative Pathology Robbins Distinguished Educator Award in 2023, the Dalldorf Teaching Excellence Award in 2017, and the Foundation Phase Outstanding Director Award from the UNC Medical Class of 2020. He currently chairs the 2025-2026 Meritorious Awards Committee for the American Society for Investigative Pathology, has served as Director of Graduate Studies for the Molecular and Cellular Pathology Ph.D. program since 2012, and previously held positions such as Associate Director of Graduate Studies and Editorial Board member for the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology.
