José Goldemberg is a Brazilian physicist and Professor Emeritus at the Universidade de São Paulo. He earned his Ph.D. in physical science from USP and served as a full professor at the Institute of Physics, which he directed from 1970 to 1978. He was rector of USP from 1986 to 1989. Goldemberg has held numerous leadership roles, including president of the Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science, director of the Energy Company of the State of São Paulo from 1983 to 1986, and various federal government positions from 1990 to 1992, such as Secretary of State for Science and Technology, interim Secretary of the Environment, and Minister of Education. He is a leading expert on energy and environment issues, with research specializations in nuclear physics, renewable energy, and sustainability. Goldemberg has authored numerous technical papers and books on these topics and served as chairman of the editorial board and a lead author of the UNDP World Energy Assessment. He received the Blue Planet Award in 2008, the Volvo Environmental Award in 2000, the Conrad Wessel Foundation Science Award in 2014, and the Grand Cross of the National Order of Scientific Merit in 1995. He has also been honored as a patron of the Institute of Advanced Studies at USP and remains active in academic and public roles.
