Josep Peñuelas is a CSIC Research Professor at the Center for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications (CREAF) and director of the Global Ecology Unit CREAF-CSIC-UAB-UB at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He previously served as Titular Professor of Ecology at the University of Barcelona until 1990. Peñuelas holds a PhD in Ecology from the University of Barcelona. His research focuses on global ecology, global change, climate change, atmosphere-biosphere interactions, biogenic volatile organic compounds, remote sensing, plant ecophysiology, ecosystem functioning, ecometabolomics, biogeochemistry, and environmental sustainability. He has published six books on ecology and more than 1,800 papers in scientific journals and books, including over 1,480 in Science Citation Index journals such as Nature, Science, PNAS, Global Change Biology, Ecology Letters, and New Phytologist. His works have received approximately 195,500 citations on Google Scholar, with an h-index of 206.
Peñuelas has coordinated major international projects, including an ERC-Synergy grant, and has supervised 64 PhD students, 51 master's students, and 64 post-docs. He serves on the editorial boards of journals including Trends in Plant Science, Ecology Letters, Global Change Biology, and New Phytologist. He has received numerous awards, such as the National Research Prize of Catalonia in 2010, the King Jaume I Prize in 2015, the Ramon Margalef Prize in Ecology in 2016, the Marsh Award for Climate Change Research from the British Ecological Society in 2018, and the Alejandro Malaspina Prize in 2023. Peñuelas is a highly cited scientist in ecology and environmental sciences according to Clarivate and has been recognized among the most influential researchers globally. He is a member of several academies and scientific associations and has been a visiting professor at more than 50 universities worldwide.
