Joseph Betts serves as Senior Lecturer in the Department of Accountancy and Business Law in the Cameron School of Business at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. He earned a B.A. in Political Science summa cum laude from the University of North Carolina Wilmington in May 1996 as a Political Science/Pre-Law major, complemented by additional studies toward a Master of Science in Accountancy. During his undergraduate tenure, Betts was President of the Kappa Delta chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor Society, and received the James C. Dixon award in Political Science. He completed his M.S. in Accountancy from the AACSB-accredited Cameron School of Business at UNCW in June 1997 and holds memberships in Beta Alpha Psi, the National Honor Society for Accounting, and the Institute of Management Accountants with concentrations in Taxation and Audit studies. Betts obtained his Juris Doctorate from the University of North Carolina School of Law in May 2000.
Betts distinguished himself in law school with the Franklin T. Dupree Memorial Scholarship, providing 90% tuition coverage, the Gressman-Pollitt Award for Best Overall Oral Advocacy in Spring 1998, and a Certificate of Merit for the highest grade in the Estate Planning Seminar in Fall 1999. Prior to his collegiate education, he attended the U.S. Defense Language Institute at the Presidio of Monterey, California, from January to August 1987, earning honors in an intensive course on Spanish language and Hispanic cultures. As part of UNCW's graduate faculty in accountancy and business law, Betts has contributed to the academic community, including serving as the Accountancy and Business Law marshal during the May 2019 commencement exercises. His office is located in Cameron Hall 230Q.
