Professor Joseph Firth is Professor of Psychology & Mental Health at the University of Manchester. He holds a PhD from the Division of Psychology and Mental Health at the University of Manchester and a BSc (1st Hons) in Psychology from the University of Sheffield. His current research focuses on the use of digital technologies and physical health interventions to improve physical and mental health outcomes in people living with mental illness.
Professor Firth is a UKRI Future Leaders Fellow and has held honorary fellowships at Western Sydney University and Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. He has received multiple awards, including Clarivate World Highly Cited Researcher in Psychology/Psychiatry for 2020–2024, the USERN Laureate for Social Sciences in 2022, and Research.com’s #1 Rising Star in Science in the UK in 2022. He has authored over 300 peer-reviewed articles in leading journals such as The BMJ, The Lancet Psychiatry, World Psychiatry, and The New England Journal of Medicine. He was lead author of the 2019 Lancet Commission on protecting physical health in people with mental illness and contributed to the World Health Organization’s 2020 guidelines on physical activity and sedentary behaviour.
