Professor Joseph Liu is a Full Professor in the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University, serving as Lead of the Monash Cybersecurity Discipline Group and Founding Director of the Monash Blockchain Technology Centre, established in 2019. He previously acted as Course Director for the Master of Cybersecurity from 2020 to 2022. Liu earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Information Engineering from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2004, along with a Master of Philosophy in 2001 and a Bachelor of Engineering in 1999 from the same institution. His research specializations include cybersecurity, cloud security with a focus on data protection and privacy, electronic healthcare system security, blockchain security and privacy-preserving features, lightweight security for devices such as sensors and RFID, and applied cryptography encompassing public key cryptography, identity-based cryptography, digital signatures, attribute-based systems, and anonymous signatures like group and ring signatures.
Liu has authored over 200 publications in top-tier venues including CRYPTO, ACM CCS, NDSS, and INFOCOM, accumulating more than 10,000 citations. His pioneering research on linkable ring signatures forms the theoretical basis for Monero (XMR), one of the world's largest privacy-focused cryptocurrencies with a market capitalization exceeding US$2 billion. He has received the ICT Researcher of the Year 2018 Award from the Australian Computer Society for contributions to blockchain and cybersecurity, and the IEEE Technical Achievement Award in 2021 from the Technology and Engineering Management Society for blockchain achievements. Liu has served as Program Chair for conferences such as ProvSec 2014, Pairing 2015, and ACISP 2016, and as guest co-editor for special issues in Pervasive and Mobile Computing, Security and Communication Networks, and International Journal of Distributed Sensor Networks. He is the International Standardization Project Editor for ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 27 18033-5 on identity-based ciphers and Co-Chair of the IEEE Blockchain Australia/New Zealand chapter. Additionally, he leads the Algorand Centre of Excellence on Sustainability Informatics for the Pacific.
