Dr Joseph Burgoyne is a Reader in Cardiovascular Biology at King’s College London. He is based in the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine & Sciences within the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine and serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Cardiovascular Sciences Section. His research examines the biochemical and molecular processes that contribute to cardiovascular health and disease, with particular emphasis on redox signalling, mitochondrial energy metabolism, autophagy, histone crotonylation and cGMP-dependent protein kinase regulation. Burgoyne leads the Burgoyne Lab and has secured multiple British Heart Foundation grants, including awards for projects on heart failure, blood pressure regulation during sepsis, vascular aging and dilated cardiomyopathy. He received a King’s Innovation award in 2021, the 2011 British Society for Cardiovascular Research Bernard and Joan Marshall Young Investigator prize, and was runner-up in the 2007 Millipore Young Cell Signaller Competition. Key publications include the 2023 paper “IDH3γ functions as a redox switch regulating mitochondrial energy metabolism and contractility in the heart” in Nature Communications, the 2021 “Guidelines for the use and interpretation of assays for monitoring autophagy (4th edition)” in Autophagy, the 2019 paper on resveratrol and cGMP-dependent protein kinase in Circulation, and the 2020 study on nitro-alkene-dependent inhibition of soluble epoxide hydrolase in Redox Biology. Burgoyne has contributed to more than 40 research outputs and serves as an invited speaker and PhD examiner at institutions including Oxford University and the University of Birmingham. He participates in programme committees for the International Society for Heart Research and contributes to the BHF Centre PhD programme on human models of cardiovascular disease.
