Ms Joy Kloester is a Lecturer and deputy course convenor in the Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery (Honours) at Monash University's School of Nursing and Midwifery, within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. A registered midwife, she brings ten years of clinical experience from diverse hospital and community-based settings, spanning primary to tertiary care. For the past six years, Joy has contributed to midwifery education in the Bachelor of Midwifery and combined Nursing/Midwifery Honours programs, while maintaining semi-regular clinical practice. Her academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Midwifery from Australian Catholic University and a First-Class Honours Bachelor of Nursing from Monash University, awarded in 2022. She has also served as a Research Assistant and is actively involved in multiple research projects.
Joy's research focuses on midwifery education and practice, with particular emphasis on supporting informed decision-making for women and families and advancing Respectful Maternity Care. She is currently undertaking a Doctorate by Research at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, investigating "Making Continuity of Midwifery Care Work in Victoria: Supporting Sustainable, Autonomous Midwifery Practice." Her work from the Honours thesis has been published in leading Q1 midwifery journals, and she has presented at numerous national conferences. Notable publications include: "How midwives facilitate informed decisions in the third stage of labour – an exploration through portraiture" (Midwifery, 2023, with Brand and Willey); "Factors that Promote a Positive Childbearing Experience: A Qualitative Study" (Journal of Midwifery & Women's Health, 2023, with Hall et al.); "Midwives’ experiences of facilitating informed decision-making – a narrative literature review" (Midwifery, 2022, with Willey, Hall, and Brand); and "Informed decisions in the third stage of labour – midwives experiences through the lens of portraiture" (Women and Birth, 2022). Joy has demonstrated leadership by hosting a film screening and panel discussion on contemporary maternity care issues, fostering dialogue among midwives, students, obstetricians, and consumers. Her contributions align with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health, education, and justice.
