Juli Dixon is Professor Emerita of Mathematics Education at the University of Central Florida, affiliated with the School of Teacher Education in the College of Community Innovation and Education. She holds a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Mathematics Education from the University of Florida, a master’s degree in Mathematics Education from Syracuse University, and a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Education from the State University of New York at Potsdam. Before joining UCF, Dr. Dixon taught mathematics in urban public schools across elementary, middle, and secondary levels and worked as a secondary mathematics educator at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. At UCF, she has coordinated the master’s and doctoral programs in mathematics education and contributed to initiatives like the Empowering STEM Teachers with Earned Doctorates Noyce Program.
Dr. Dixon’s research specializations include mathematics teacher professional development, spatial visualization in learning geometry concepts such as reflection and rotation, technology integration in mathematics instruction, and establishing social and sociomathematical norms in classrooms to promote student discourse and justification. Her Google Scholar profile shows over 1,000 citations, reflecting her impact in the field. Key publications include peer-reviewed articles such as “Computer use and visualization in students’ construction of reflection and rotation concepts” (School Science and Mathematics, 1997), “The effects of mentor-supported technology professional development on middle school mathematics teachers’ attitudes and practice” (Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education, 2006), and “Improving the quality of mathematics teaching with effective planning practices” (Teacher Development, 2013). She is the lead author of the Making Sense of Mathematics for Teaching professional development series covering grades K-12, including titles like Making Sense of Mathematics for Teaching Grades K-2, Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, and High School (various years, Solution Tree Press), as well as K-12 textbooks GO Math!, AGA, Integrated Math, and Into Math (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt). Dr. Dixon has received the 2021 Kenneth P. Kidd Educator of the Year award from the Florida Council of Teachers of Mathematics. A sought-after speaker, she delivers keynotes and workshops throughout North America and leads DNA Mathematics, focusing on inclusive mathematics education informed by her personal experiences supporting family members with special needs.
