About Julia

Professor Julia Beatty is Professor Emerita of Feline Medicine in the Sydney School of Veterinary Science, Faculty of Science, at the University of Sydney. She holds a BSc (Hons) from University College London, a BVetMed from the Royal Veterinary College, University of London (1989), and a PhD from the University of Glasgow (1994) on the immune response to feline immunodeficiency virus. A Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (FANZCVSc) in Feline Medicine (2002) and Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons-recognized specialist in feline medicine, she joined the University of Sydney in 2004 as Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Veterinary Science (now Sydney School of Veterinary Science), progressing to Associate Professor and Professor of Feline Medicine. Key appointments included Hospital Director, Head of Small Animal Medicine, and Associate Dean for Veterinary Clinical Sciences (2014-2017). As a Feline Internal Medicine Specialist at the Valentine Charlton Cat Centre, University Veterinary Teaching Hospital Sydney, she lectured in undergraduate small animal medicine and supervised veterinary students at Masters and PhD levels.

Julia Beatty's research focuses on feline infectious diseases and virology, including domestic cat hepadnavirus linked to hepatocellular carcinoma, Felis catus gammaherpesvirus 1, retroviruses (FeLV, FIV), parvoviruses, and other pathogens like Bartonella and haemoplasmas. She has authored over 150 publications, amassing more than 3,700 citations. Notable works include 'Low-grade alimentary lymphoma: clinicopathological findings and response to treatment in 17 cases' (Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, 2009), 'Feline alimentary lymphoma: 1. Classification, risk factors, clinical signs and non-invasive diagnostics' (2012), 'Pleural effusion in the cat: a practical approach to determining aetiology' (2010), and 'Cat viruses as windows into human oncogenesis' (2026). Her contributions earned the Australian Small Animal Veterinary Association Award for Scientific Excellence (2014), University of Sydney Thompson Fellowship (2012), Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (2020), and Stanford's top 2% most highly cited scientists lists (2023-2025). She serves on editorial boards for Viruses and Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, was past-President of the Feline Chapter of ANZCVSc, and holds board positions with the International Society of Companion Animal Infectious Diseases.
