Dr Julia Gilmartin-Thomas is a registered pharmacist and Adjunct Senior Research Fellow in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University. She earned her Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) in 2009, Graduate Certificate in Pharmacy Practice in 2012, and Doctor of Philosophy in 2014 from Monash University's Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, followed by a Master of Biostatistics from Monash University between 2016 and 2020. Her career includes a CW Maplethorpe Postdoctoral Fellowship for Pharmaceutical Education and Research at University College London School of Pharmacy from 2013 to 2015, a visiting postdoctoral researcher position at the School of Medicine, University of Eastern Finland in 2014, and an Honorary Senior Research Associate role at University College London from 2016 to 2018. Since 2016, she has held a National Health and Medical Research Council – Australian Research Council Dementia Research Development Fellowship. She heads the Chronic Pain and Medication Use in Ageing Research Group at the Alfred Centre.
Gilmartin-Thomas's research specializations encompass the quality use of medications in older populations and people with dementia, pharmacoepidemiology, undergraduate medical and pharmacy education, dementia, older adults, and aged care. She has received awards such as the 17th International Social Pharmacy Workshop Travel Award in 2012, Australian Government Department of Education and Training Australian Postgraduate Award from 2010 to 2013, CW Maplethorpe Postdoctoral Fellowship Travel Awards in 2014 and 2015, Alzheimer's Australia Dementia Research Foundation Rosemary Foundation Travel Award in 2014, and Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK) since 2015. Key publications include 'Prevalence of Actionable Pharmacogenetic Genotype Frequencies, Cautionary Medication Use, and Polypharmacy in Community-Dwelling Older Adults' (2025), 'Top 10 consumer and healthcare professional priorities for research in the field of quality use of medicines in people living with dementia' (2025), 'Best practice in dementia health care: Key clinical practice pointers from a national conference and innovative opportunities for pharmacy practice' (2024), 'Consumer and Healthcare Professional Led Priority Setting for Quality Use of Medicines in People with Dementia: Gathering Unanswered Research Questions' (2023), and 'Development of a Digital Health Intervention to Support Patients on a Waitlist for Orthopedic Specialist Care: Co-Design Study' (2023). She serves as Assistant Editor for the Journal of Pharmacy Practice and Research since 2017 and Associate Editor for the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease since 2018. Gilmartin-Thomas has represented early career researchers on the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine Research Committee and the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences Early Career Researcher Steering Committee since 2016, supervises PhD students, and has presented nationally and internationally as an invited speaker at conferences and public engagement events.
